Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV) …and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
There is no greater gift given to mankind on this earth than the word of God! I write that with emphatic belief because of what the word says about the word. Knowing the word helps us through many a trying time but also gives us the ultimate weapon against that lying enemy that we face on a daily basis. Before we go any further know this, that swords have many different variations and one sword is not going to be a replica of another.
Now there are manufacturers out there that can make swords that look exactly like swords of times past, but the manufacturer of YOUR sword does one of a kind work and there are no replications or replicators of His work. Now look at your sword, remember the forges that shaped that sword which is specific to you. You know the heft, the weight, the best stroke for your sword don’t you? Remember also that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God and that we often have been driven to our word (to God) through trial, through elation, seeking deeper revelation of Jesus and a host of other reasons. Each time we turn to the word we slide that sharpening stone down the length of that blade and that sword becomes sharper. We also become more skillful with our sword through use. So why has all this utterance been made about swords? Because when you handle your sword you potentially paint a picture of the face of God for someone.
See the word of God is our Heavenly Fathers’ revelation of Himself to mankind, the very essence of who God is is pressed between the covers of your bible, my bible, and the bibles of saints worldwide, and how we wield our swords can determine how people who don’t know God will view Him. Take into account what John 1:1 says of the word;
John 1:1 (NKJV) ”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
John 1:14 (NKJV) ”And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
There are many other facets of “swordplay” and I don’t intend to grind on this one surface but I think if we remember what made us the swordsman we are than its easier to be available to those who may need to see the Father as a teacher of the sword and not just a hewer of the sword. It also helps us to remember that it’s in the Spirit of God that we handle the sword with the most care. We are armed children of God, and we must wield our swords to cut down the enemy, defend the cross, and help the lost. The word of God can be used as a rod or a staff, depending on its use, we take a snapshot of God for someone. After all Gods’ word is who He is. Though striving none of us is perfect yet, let us handle the word with care. Lastly, the devil knows the word, to fight him effectively so should you. As always your brother in arms.
